A little history
Before the Revolution, Mortrée was not a parish and possessed a hospital for pilgrims, with a chapel dedicated to the Sainte-Vierge. The commune of Mortrée was established by decree of 6 thermidor an II (24 July 1794) by merging the three small communes of Bray, Marigny, and O (where the famous château d'Ô is located) around the hamlet of la Grande Mortrée, where a coaching inn had been established on the road from Alençon to Caen. In 1832, following deliberation by the communal council, the église Saint-Pierre de Marigny was demolished. It had been abandoned since the merging of that commune with that of Mortrée.
