La Ferté Macé is a new French commune situated in the département of Orne in the Normandie region. It was established on 12 January 2016 through the merger of the former communes of La Ferté-Macé and Antoigny, which became a delegated commune of La Ferté Macé.
A little history
The history of La Ferté is for a large part intertwined with the history of the Passais. The ridge line between the basin of the Mayenne and the Orne, which separates the Gaulish tribes of the Esuviens and the Cénomans, was occupied by a Gaulish road that was later Romanised, and furnished with defensive points between Tourouvre and Avranches, passing probably through La Ferté. The Gauls had the habit of surrounding themselves with neutral zones to isolate themselves from their neighbours. This border region was therefore probably very sparsely populated and covered with forests, hence the name "Désert" associated with numerous localities in the region.
