L'Aigle covers 18 km², lies between 195 and 277 m above sea level and had 7,663 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Aiglons.
L'Aigle (pronounced [lɛɡl], written Laigle until 1961) is a French commune, situated in the North-West of France, at the confluence of the Risle, in the département of Orne, in the Normandie region. The town, capital of the pays d'Ouche, has a population of 7,663 inhabitants, and is the fourth largest town in Orne, although it is not the chef-lieu of an arrondissement (that distinction belongs to Mortagne-au-Perche). L'Aigle, on the doorstep of Orne, lies on a major communication route linking the département of Manche and mont Saint-Michel as well as the gateway to Bretagne and the département of Ille-et-Vilaine to the west, to Paris to the east.
A little history
The barony of L'Aigle was the first of the duchy of Alençon. Its former lords have been known since the time of Duke Raoul. They held a seat at the échiquier d'Alençon before all other lords. In 1077, while Guillaume le Conquérant was at L'Aigle preparing an expedition against Rotrou du Perche, a dispute broke out among his sons, leading to the rebellion of Robert Courteheuse against his father. In 1119, at war with Henri Ier Beauclerc, Louis VI le Gros seized the town, which was burned down.
