Alençon is a French commune, the prefecture of the Orne département, located in the Normandie region. The town experienced a relative decline following the establishment of the railway networks.
A little history
In the second millennium before Christ, the site was no more than a crossroads of routes and the passage of the tin route. A Gaulish foundation of the Aulerques, Alencium, with its few houses, within a small oval enclosure, around 300 BC, developed with a new enclosure, probably a wooden palisade, which then surrounded an area 250 metres in diameter. Traces of it are said to have been found in the marshy ground of the rue de la Juiverie.
