A little history
Celtic occupation of the site of Rouen is attested among other things by the archaeological discovery of a dugout canoe dating from around 900 BC, at the end of the Bronze Age. A settlement developed during the Gallo-Roman period to become the capital of the tribe of the Véliocasses, a Celtic people of Gaul, whose territory in the Seine valley perhaps extended from present-day Caudebec-en-Caux to Briva Isarae (Pontoise). The city proper was founded on the right bank of the Seine during the reign of Augustus, and it was the second most important city in Gaul after Lugdunum (Lyon).
