A little history
It was along the Seine that the town first developed in the old quarter of the église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption and the present-day rue Pierre-Corneille, rue de Paris, rue Denis-Papin, rue Francisco-Ferrer, rue Littré, rue Dolet and rue d'Eauplet. An established population lived on the site of the town from the earliest Antiquity. Gallo-Roman remains bear witness to this. Burials, domestic objects, jewellery, pottery, coins and medals — all from the Roman period — were discovered in the quartier de Quatre-Mares during works undertaken for the construction of the railway in 1842–1843.
