Argentan is a French commune, situated in the Orne département in Normandie, through which the Orne flows. It has a population of 13,527 inhabitants. A sub-prefecture of the Orne, it is the chief town of the arrondissement d'Argentan.
A little history
Built in a hollow along the Orne, it is thought to have been the capital of the Gaulish people of the Arvii or a small town of the Essuvii. The town experienced progressive growth until the early Middle Ages. After the arrival of the Vikings on the Frankish coasts and during the formation of a Norman state from 911 onwards, the town of the former Neustrie was incorporated into Normandie and became the seat of a vicomté. According to certain written sources, the town of Argentan may have been given to a lieutenant of Rolf le Marcheur in exchange for his loyalty.
