Mortagne-sur-Sèvre is a French commune situated in the département of Vendée in the région of Pays de la Loire, and is the chief town of the canton of Mortagne-sur-Sèvre. The commune brings together Mortagne-sur-Sèvre, Évrunes and Saint-Hilaire-de-Mortagne. It is twinned with Aumühle and Wohltorf (Germany) and Volovat-Burla (Romania).
A little history
The region was populated by the Gaulish people of the Ambilatres and was then conquered by Caesar along with the rest of Gaul (58–51 BC). A Merovingian cemetery has been identified within the commune. In 2020, archaeologists uncovered remains from the early Middle Ages, principally a small funerary ensemble comprising 99 tombs dated to the 6th and 7th centuries AD.
