Mornant, the town
Mornant covers 15.8 km², lies between 287 and 471 m above sea level and had 6,282 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Mornant is a French commune, situated in the Rhône department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
A little history
As certain remains bear witness, the area around Mornant must have been inhabited as early as the Gaulish period and perhaps even before, since a megalithic complex located in the middle of a field in the hamlet of Luet should be noted (the complex could date back to 3000, though some specialists doubt that it is a dolmen). Only scant evidence is available to suggest a genuine settlement of the area in Gallo-Roman times. On the other hand, one cannot help but be struck by the sheer scale of the works required for the construction of the aqueduc du Gier. Built during the reign of Hadrien (early 2nd century AD), it carried water from the massif du Pilat all the way to Fourvière.
