Monts, the town
Monts covers 27.3 km², lies between 47 and 99 m above sea level and had 8,080 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Monts (pronounced [mɔ̃]) is a French commune situated in the département of Indre-et-Loire in the région of Centre-Val de Loire. Human presence has been attested in this commune in the Indre valley since the Palaeolithic period and the first mention of the place (de Montibus) appears in Latin in a charter from the 9th century. The settlement of the kings of France in the Loire valley, from Charles VII to François Ier, was an opportunity for members or close associates of the court to purchase estates in the region.
A little history
Prehistoric and protohistoric remains are scarce. Human presence (flint tools found on sandy terraces of the Indre) is attested during the Lower Palaeolithic period, and Neolithic pottery has been found on one site. No megalith has been recorded at Monts, and no place name evokes any memory of one. A double-headed stone axe, dated to the boundary between the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age, was discovered in a quarry at the beginning of the 20th century. This tool, which has since disappeared, appears to have come from a Breton workshop.
