Montmorillon, the town
Montmorillon covers 57 km², lies between 82 and 168 m above sea level and had 5,821 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Montmorillon is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, a sub-prefecture of the département of Vienne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its inhabitants are known as the Montmorillonnaises and Montmorillonnais and are sometimes nicknamed the Macarons in reference to the small cake produced locally since the 19th century.
A little history
Between 1968 and 1982, several excavation campaigns were organised and led by Pierre Marcel at the "La Piscine" deposit, a prehistoric site located near the Centre aquatique de Montmorillon. Archaeology has uncovered a variety of remains, bearing witness to the presence of human occupation during the Magdalenian phase (between -15,500 and -12,000). From this period, Montmorillon retains very few traces. However, the territory appears to have been occupied by large agricultural, craft or religious complexes (the Gallo-Roman sanctuary of Mazamas at Saint-Léomer).
