Ligugé is a commune in the Centre-West of France, situated to the south of Poitiers, in the département of Vienne in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The town is best known for its abbaye Saint-Martin, the oldest monastic establishment in the Western world still in activity.
A little history
The first abbey in France was that of Ligugé, founded by Martin de Tours in 360. From the Revolution onwards, the abbey was no longer the centre of life in the town. It was no longer there to provide for everything either. Its possessions were sold as biens nationaux, such as the wheat mill on the Clain.
