A little history
As far back as the Gallo-Roman period, La Roche-Posay was already a thermal spa. The lordship belonged to the house of Preuilly and passed by marriage, around 1410, to Geoffroy Chasteigner, who became baron de Preuilly and de la Roche-Posay. This branch produced several chamberlains, counsellors and ambassadors to the kings from François Ier to Henri IV, as well as a bishop of Poitiers (1611). It died out with Charles (de) Chasteigner, deputy of the nobility of Poitou to the États généraux de Tours in 1651, given the title of marquis de la Roche-Pozay, who died in 1667, and whose daughter married the marquis de Pleumartin in 1662. The coat of arms of the house of Chasteigner became that of the commune.
