Chauvigny is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, situated in the département of Vienne, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are known as the Chauvinois(es). The fourth largest urban area in the département after Poitiers, Châtellerault and Loudun, Chauvigny owes most of its renown to its significant medieval heritage.
A little history
To the south of Chauvigny, the grotte de Jioux, having served as a shelter during the Mesolithic period (approximately 12,000 to 6,000 years before our era), is evidence of the very ancient occupation of the area around Chauvigny. During the Neolithic period (from 5,000 to 2,000 years before our era), humans lived on the site of the present-day donjon de Gouzon on the plateau. The remains of a ditch and post holes belonging to large buildings were discovered by archaeologists. Tools (scrapers, burins...) and pottery remains were also found there.
