Châtellerault is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, located in the département de la Vienne in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are known as the Châtelleraudais. The second largest town in the département after Poitiers, it has 31,809 inhabitants and is at the head of an urban unit of 41,505 inhabitants (2010) and an urban area of 70,145 inhabitants (2015).
A little history
In 936, the first mention of Airaldus (Airaud) appears, though without any indication of location, whose lord, close to the comte de Poitou, Guillaume Tête d'Étoupe, is said to have been. In 952, at the confluence of the Vienne and the Clain, there existed a ford which the descendants of Airaud had protected by a wooden tower built downstream on a motte, near the present-day église Saint-Romain de Châtellerault. The town of Châtellerault grew up around it, on the left bank of the Vienne. In the 11th century, the settlement passed by alliance to the family of La Rochefoucauld.
