Loudun, the town
Loudun covers 43.8 km², lies between 47 and 120 m above sea level and had 6,839 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Loudun is a commune in the Centre-West of France, situated in the département of Vienne. Its inhabitants are called the Loudunais. It is a town with the ruins of the former château destroyed by Richelieu, and whose historic centre is surrounded by old ramparts.
A little history
Loudun was a Pictavian city. A land of competing ambitions, the Loudunais and the sénéchaussée de Loudun were attached to Anjou, unlike the administrative division in the 21st century, where the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine presents a northward extension into the département of Vienne to encompass Loudun. In the Middle Ages and up until the French Revolution, it was the Saumurois that pushed into what is now the Poitou, encompassing Loudun and the Loudunais as far south as Mirebeau. In 986, Guillaume III d'Aquitaine and Geoffroy Ier d'Anjou clashed at the lieu-dit les Roches Saint-Paul, which was at that time attached to the parish of Coussay.
