Montgeron (pronounced [mɔ̃ʒǝʁɔ̃]) is a French commune situated nineteen kilometres south-east of Paris in the département de l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. It is divided between the canton de Vigneux-sur-Seine and that of Draveil. Situated between the two valleys of the Yerres and the Seine at the foot of the forêt de Sénart on the strategic road from Paris to Bourgogne which became the route nationale 6, the village, having once been an important royal hunting retreat on the property of Monsieur, became in the nineteenth century a holiday resort for the Parisian bourgeoisie and artists, among them painters of renown such as Claude Monet and Edgar Degas.
A little history
In the forêt de Sénart near the ru d'Oly, a flint polyhedron dating from prehistory was found, attesting to human occupation of the site during that period. In the Gallo-Roman era, a settlement was located at the lieu-dit Le Nouzet and the present-day gué de Senlis served as a crossing point on the road between Lutèce and Agedincum (the Roman-era name for the commune of Sens in the Yonne). The place was mentioned in the time of Louis VII around 1147 under the description of "Auprès du mont de Gisons, dans la paroisse de Vigneux." In the twelfth century, a leper colony was established in the north of the territory. It ceased its activity in 1604 and was converted into a hermitage around 1630.
