Montfort-le-Gesnois [mɔ̃fɔʁ lə ʒɛnwa] is a French commune, situated in the département de la Sarthe in the région Pays de la Loire, with a population of 2,939 inhabitants (the Montgesnois). Montfort-le-Gesnois is also the seat of the communauté de communes Le Gesnois Bilurien. It was the chef-lieu of the canton de Montfort-le-Gesnois until 2015.
A little history
The village of Montfort-le-Gesnois arose from the merger of two communes, Montfort-le-Rotrou and Pont-de-Gennes, on 1 January 1986 (prefectoral order of simple merger dated 1 November 1985). As the name Rotrou indicates, the first known lords of Montfort were the counts of Perche, viscounts of Châteaudun, sires or counts of Nogent and Mortagne.
