A little history
Montfort-l'Amaury took its name from Amaury Ier, the second seigneur de Montfort. It was King Robert II (972-1031) who had the castle built in 996 on the butte de Montfort, which was then called Montfortis. Montfort-l'Amaury was the fief of the Montfort family from the beginning of the 11th century with Guillaume de Hainaut. His son, Amaury Ier (1028-1053), had the ramparts built, of which remains can still be seen today.
