Mont-Saint-Martin, the town

Mont-Saint-Martin covers 8.8 km², lies between 260 and 398 m above sea level and had 9,361 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Mont-Saint-Martin is a French commune situated in the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle in the Grand Est region. It forms part of the communauté d'agglomération de Longwy. The commune long drew its wealth and renown from the metallurgical and steel industry, which came to an end in this region at the close of the 20th century with the steel crisis in the Lorrain basin.

A little history

During the Gallo-Roman period, Mont-Saint-Martin stood at the crossroads of two Roman roads leading respectively to the camps of Titelberg and Virton. On 10 May 1096, Albert de Dagsbourg, comte de Musau, de Metz et de Longwy founded the Prieuré de Mont-Saint-Martin, which was abandoned by the religious community during the 13th century. Oral tradition tells us that this site may have been occupied as early as the Early Middle Ages, at a time close to the establishment of the prieuré Saint-Martin. The old cemetery surrounding the priory church served the inhabitants of Longwy until 1638. In 1789, the priory became national property.
