La plus grande partie de la commune se situe à 600 mètres d'altitude, au pied du col des Mille Martyrs, dans le prolongement septentrional d'un vaste plateau jurassien qui s'étend depuis le plateau du Grand-Ratz, jusqu'à la chaîne de l'Épine, en Savoie, non loin du massif de la Chartreuse, situé plus à l'est. Miribel-les-Échelles est une des communes adhérentes à la communauté de communes Cœur de Chartreuse, dont le siège est situé dans la commune voisine d'Entre-Deux-Guiers.
