Voiron is a French commune located in the ninth constituency of the département of Isère in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and, formerly, attached to the ancient province of Dauphiné. Voiron is the seat of the Pays voironnais, grouped into an agglomeration community of thirty-four communes and more than 90,000 inhabitants. The town of Voiron alone has approximately 21,000 inhabitants.
A little history
On the territory of the neighbouring commune of La Buisse, located 5 kilometres to the south-east of Voiron station, the excavation of a quarry in 1841 brought to light around fifty bodies as well as significant artefacts (flint blades, deer antlers including a pickaxe), dating from the Azilian period (Epipaleolithic). Another site dating from the Neolithic was discovered on the southern shore of the lac de Paladru, approximately 10 kilometres to the north of Sermorens. At the beginning of Antiquity, the territory of the Allobroges extended over the greater part of the lands that would later be named the Sapaudia (this "pays des sapins" would become la Savoie) and to the north of the Isère.
