The commune, which has existed under this name since the merger of the two communes of Bourgoin and Jallieu in 1967, is the centre of the unité urbaine de Bourgoin-Jallieu, a conurbation of more than 62,000 inhabitants, the third largest in the département, after those of Grenoble and Vienne. The commune and its conurbation form part of the aire urbaine de Lyon.
A little history
Settlements dating from the Neolithic period have been identified on the territory of neighbouring communes, such as Saint-Marcel-Bel-Accueil (grotte de Messenas), situated less than 5 km from Bourgoin. In the neighbouring marshes, archaeological surveys carried out in the sector of La Maladière indicate a settlement, near a lake of glacial origin that has since disappeared, bearing traces of a village contemporary with the site des Baigneurs du lac de Paladru. The current sector of Bourgoin-Jallieu lies to the west of the ancient territory of the Allobroges, a group of Gaulish tribes occupying the former Savoie, as well as the part of Dauphiné situated to the north of the river Isère.
