Meyzieu is a French commune situated in the north-eastern part of the métropole de Lyon, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its inhabitants are known as the Majolans. With an industrial zone of 210 hectares and the completion of numerous housing programmes, the commune is experiencing demographic and economic growth, supported in particular by the construction of numerous public facilities.
A little history
Meyzieu remained a modest market town for a long time, and it was only from the middle of the 20th century that the town established itself as the north-eastern gateway to the Lyon conurbation. The origins of Meyzieu go back to the village of Bardieu, situated in the pays de Velin, around a beneficial Celtic spring that provided a pretext for Gallo-Roman and medieval settlements. In the 11th century, one of the first feudal lords built a château on a motte near Bardieu and asked the sires de Chandieu to provide its protection. The inhabitants therefore settled at the foot of this building, which provided them with a refuge, and a parish church was built.
