Meulan-en-Yvelines is a commune in the Yvelines, in the Île-de-France region, situated in the Vexin français, at the confluence with the Aubette, on the right bank of the Seine, approximately 16 km east of Mantes-la-Jolie. Its inhabitants are called the Meulanais.
A little history
Originally, Meulan was a river port on the Seine, and a Gaulish trading post, situated on the border between the Véliocasses to the north and the Carnutes to the south. A former place of worship and certainly a former Gaulish oppidum, perhaps the unreliable Locenius (which meant war post), which stood between the lieu-dit Thun and the bank of the Seine at a place called la Rive. The oppidum belonged to the Carnutes, to whom the Romans recognised the entire left bank of the Seine at the level of the present-day Yvelines. The Roman road from Beauvais to Orléans passed through Meulan and crossed the Seine at les Mureaux before continuing towards Flins and Maule.
