Merville (Mervila in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Pays toulousain, which extends around Toulouse along the valley of the Garonne, bordered to the west by the hills of the Savès, to the east by those of the Lauragais and to the south by those of the valley of the Ariège and the Volvestre. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Garonne, the Save, the ruisseau de la Capelette, the ruisseau de Ribarot and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Merville was originally divided into three communities. The first was the vast community of Mayras, situated on the plateau, whose Fort overlooked the entire valley of the Save. Numerous pieces of pottery of Gallo-Roman origin come back to the surface whenever these fields are ploughed. A Visigothic sarcophagus and other remains from the early Middle Ages have even been found in this area. A church, about which nothing is known, once stood on this spot. The second was the community of Homerville, situated a little further south than the current centre of the village, where the villa of Otmerius (the house, buildings, land and property of the owner) is thought to have stood.
