Muret (Murèth [my'ɾɛt] in Gascon Occitan) is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Haute-Garonne, of which it is one of the sub-prefectures, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Pays toulousain, which extends around Toulouse along the valley of the Garonne, bordered to the west by the hills of the Savès, to the east by those of the Lauragais and to the south by those of the valley of the Ariège and the Volvestre. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Garonne, the Louge, the canal de Saint-Martory, the Touch, the Ousseau, the Roussimort, the ruisseau de la Saudrune, the ruisseau de l'Aussau and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
Various discoveries by local archaeologists suggest that the territory of Muret was populated as early as the Neolithic period, with the remains of a hut floor dating to around 4000 BC having been uncovered to the north of the town. Various objects from the Copper Age, approximately 3000 to 2500 BC, then from the Bronze Age, from 1700 BC.
