Mélisey, the town
Mélisey covers 20.7 km², lies between 322 and 470 m above sea level and had 1,625 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Mélisey (pronounced [meliˈze]) is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Saône, the cultural and historical region of Franche-Comté and the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is the seat of the communauté de communes des mille étangs. Occupied at least since the early Middle Ages, Mélisey became in the 15th century a market town concentrating all the trading and commercial activities of the valley before becoming a small industrial textile town in the 19th century.
A little history
In the chevet of Romanesque architecture of the église Saints-Pierre-et-Paul, archaeological excavations carried out between 1989 and 1990 led to the discovery of two monolithic sarcophagi from the 8th century. In 1333, the bailliage d'Amont, one of the three bailliages of Franche-Comté, with Vesoul as its capital, was created by Philippe VI de France. The territory of Mélisey was attached to it. In 1493, during the Renaissance, the village and the whole of Franche-Comté belonged to the Germanic Empire of the Habsburgs of Spain.
