Héricourt, the town

Héricourt covers 21 km², sits at 343 m above sea level and had 10,621 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Héricourt, in Franc-Comtois Héricoué, is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Saône, in Franche-Comté, in the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The second largest town in the département by population, after Vesoul, it forms part of the pôle métropolitain Nord Franche-Comté, which has 300,000 inhabitants. It is the seat of the communauté de communes du Pays d'Héricourt.

A little history

Héricourt endured, over the centuries, Burgundian territorial ambitions, the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, the Thirty Years' War, the conquest and the French Revolution. Remains of a prehistoric enclosure, dating from the Neolithic period, at the summit of the mont Vaudois, were destroyed during the construction of the Fort of the same name in 1874. The prehistoric enclosure was 400 metres long and formed a triangle. Its height varied from 2.50 to 3.30 m and its base from 22 to 32 metres in thickness. This type of enclosure, called a vallum, is here considered particular according to Félix Vaulot, who carried out excavations there before the construction of the fort.
