Gray, pronounced [ɡʁe], is a French commune situated in the département of Haute-Saône, in Franche-Comté, in the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Situated on the Saône, on the borders of Franche-Comté and Bourgogne, it benefits from a central position relative to the towns of Besançon, Dijon, Dole, Langres and Vesoul. Gray had 5,365 inhabitants in 2023, making it the fifth most populous town in the département.
A little history
Gray was, in the 13th and 14th centuries, a town of considerable importance in Europe at that time. If in 1287 it appears that Count Othon IV de Bourgogne founded a small literary institution in Gray, the town became in the years that followed a major university hub through the agency of Nicolas IV (pope from 1288 to 1292, born in 1227 in Ascoli), who also founded, by the bull Quia Sapientia, the universities of Montpellier, Ascoli and Macerata. The enclosure of the lower courtyard of the château fort protected the city. In 1423, Philippe le Bon transferred the university to Dole, after which the town of Gray lost much of its influence.
