A little history
On 10 March 1039, the Count of Poitou and Duke of Aquitaine Eudes (Othon), the 2nd son and successor of Guillaume le Grand, was killed while besieging Mauzé, which he was attempting to retake from Geoffroi Martel d'Anjou, the 2nd husband of his stepmother the duchess Agnès. In feudal times, in the 11th century, Guillaume Bâtard Ier, reputed to be the natural son of the count-duke Guillaume le Grand (969–1030) — or at least of a member of the comital and ducal family — was established in 1063 at Milescu in Aunis by (his half-brother?) Guillaume VIII (c. 1024/1027–1086, half-brother of Duke Eudes). He received not only this land but also the toll of Mauzé, which he ceded in 1080, at an already advanced age, to the abbey of Nouaillé.
