Mauléon is a commune in the centre-west of France situated in the département of Deux-Sèvres in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It was awarded the label Village étape in 2016.
A little history
Mauléon is situated on a rocky spur surrounded by the valley of the Ouin, facing the Mont-Gaillard (Château-Gaillard) and the quartier of Saint-Jouin. In 1080, the name Mauléon appeared in the earliest charters of the abbaye de la Trinité. During the feudal era, Mauléon belonged to a family that bore its name, at least from the eleventh century onwards (most probably a cadet branch of the Thouars family), followed by its descendants Thouars, Amboise and La Trémoïlle, until 1713. In the eighteenth century, the baronnie de Mauléon was acquired by other families, notably the Châtillon family. It then took the name of Châtillon (-le-Château, -sur-Sèvre) and became the seat of the duché de Châtillon.
