Martignas-sur-Jalle [maʁtiɲas syʁ ʒal] is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Gironde in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
A little history
The oldest settlement is a Gallo-Roman villa whose remains were discovered in the north-east of the commune, at the lieu-dit Hestigeac. A hoard of coins was found there in the middle of the 20th century. The commune itself grew from dwellings around a Templar hospital establishment, dependent on the commanderie du Temple de Bordeaux. Towards the end of the Hundred Years' War, the battle known as the bataille de Martignas or the Journée manquée saw English and French forces clash on the road linking the bourg to Bordeaux.
