Mantes-la-Jolie covers 9.4 km², lies between 17 and 41 m above sea level and had 43,526 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Mantaise.
Mantes-la-Jolie [pronounced mɑ̃t la ʒoli] is a French commune, the chief town of an arrondissement in the département des Yvelines, in the Île-de-France region. It is a medium-sized town situated on the left bank of the Seine, 44 km to the west of Paris. A crossroads of waterways and overland routes, Mantes appeared very early on as a place of trade and exchange, but also, in the medieval period, as a strategic stronghold on the border of Île-de-France, facing Normandy.
A little history
Under Rome, the region formed part of Gallia Lugdunensis and was included in the fourth Lugdunensis. Medals of Augustus, Antoninus and Marcus Aurelius, along with other objects found during excavations, suggest that the region was crossed by Roman legions. Mantes was an important crossroads of Roman roads in Gaul, running from Lutetia to Mediolanum via Mantes, passing through the plateau des Mauduits, where remains of an ancient Roman road have been found. Another route ran from Caesaromagus to Carnutum via Mantes, also known as the Chaussée de Beauvais, passing through Arthies, Saint-Cyr-en-Arthies (to the west of Fontenay-Saint-Père), les Moussets, Limay and Mantes.
