Malicorne-sur-Sarthe is a French commune, situated in the Pays de la Loire region, in the département of la Sarthe, and was the former chief town of the canton of Malicorne-sur-Sarthe, attached since 2015 to that of la Suze-sur-Sarthe. It has a population of 1,854 inhabitants (the Malicornais). It is particularly well known for its faïences and holds the Ville et Métiers d'Art label.
A little history
A château, built at the beginning of the 11th century, at the time of the comte d'Anjou Foulque Nerra, stood on the banks of the Sarthe, from which it oversaw river traffic. This fortress served first to protect Anjou before taking on the role of guarding the gateways between Anjou and Maine. Malicorne formed part of the angevin sénéchaussée of La Flèche and of the former province of Anjou. Under the Ancien Régime and up until the French Revolution, Malicorne came under the pays d'élection of La Flèche.
