Malestroit ([maletʁwa]) is a French commune situated in the département of Morbihan, in the région of Bretagne. For a long time the chief town of a canton (the commune lost this status during the administrative reform of 2014 and is now incorporated into the canton of Moréac), Malestroit is crossed by the canal de Nantes à Brest and by the river Oust, which merge at this point. This town celebrated its millennium in 1987.
A little history
The menhirs of the Bois Solon (an alignment of 23 stones, two of which were particularly notable and stood 3 and 2 metres high, destroyed when the field was brought into cultivation) dated back to around 4,500 years before Christ. Malestroit arose from a division of the parishes of Pleucadeuc for its southern part and of Missiriac in 1129 for its northern part (La Madeleine), the date at which the Romanesque chapel of the léproserie de La Magdeleine (founded probably in 987) was given by Payen Ier de Malestroit to the abbaye de Marmoutier, which made it a priory. It was a stopping point on one of the routes to Compostelle.
