A little history
The village of Macau is thought to have existed since the Gallo-Roman period, as traces of Roman roads discovered at Gironville appear to confirm. The town was destroyed in the 9th century by the Normans. A text from 1027 stipulates that Guillaume V, duc d'Aquitaine and comte de Poitiers, made a donation to the monastery of Sainte-Croix de Bordeaux, comprising the church of Sainte-Marie-de-Macau and the adjacent island of Macau. An underground passage linked the fortified castle of Gironville to the church of Macau.
