Ludres, the town
Ludres covers 8.2 km², lies between 237 and 420 m above sea level and had 5,843 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

A little history
The remains of a protohistoric camp (the cité d'Affrique, where the construction process of vitrified walls has been studied) are still visible on the hillsides of Ludres, on the territory of the commune of Messein, and bear witness to an ancient settlement dating from the end of the Hallstatt period and the beginning of La Tène. Ludres has been continuously inhabited since the Iron Age, with in particular the exploitation of the minette Lorraine (an oolitic ore containing only 20% iron). An iron ore smelting furnace, dating from the period 450–550, was excavated there in 1997. It was used for the production of raw iron.
