Luçon is a commune in the centre-west of France, situated in the département of Vendée, in the Pays de la Loire region. A bishopric of which Cardinal de Richelieu was the titular holder, the spiritual capital of Bas-Poitou possesses a wide architectural heritage and has a park, the Jardin Dumaine.
A little history
Born of the proximity of the sea and the will of men, Luçon has always been linked to the Ocean, to which it is connected by a canal, the canal de Luçon, developed from a natural watercourse. In the Middle Ages, its monks contributed to the development of vast marshes that stretch as far as the eye can see to the Ocean. From the feudal period onwards, Luçon became a co-barony, with two lords sharing power. The particularity is that one was a lay baron, whilst the other baron was the abbot, and then the bishop from the 14th century onwards. A vast castle existed at that time, comprising two parts, one castle for the baron de Luçon, and another castle that encompassed the abbaye Sainte-Marie.
