Locmiquélic (prononcé) is a French commune, situated in the département of Morbihan in the Bretagne region. Located close to the Atlantic coast and looking directly onto the rade de Lorient, the commune is essentially orientated towards the sea. The Breton name Loc-Michaelic appears as early as 1385.
A little history
The parish of Riantec, which originally also encompassed Locmiquélic, Port-Louis and Gâvres, was, according to Joseph Loth and Henri François Buffet, created in the 6th century during the Breton emigration. According to Erwan Vallerie, it arose from the dismemberment in the Middle Ages of the parish of Plouhinec. The mouth of the Blavet became a frontier zone from the 11th century onwards. Whilst its right bank belonged to the Kemenet-Héboé, the left bank, where Locmiquélic stands today, was governed by the châtellenie de Nostang, which comprised the parishes of Nostang, Kervignac, Merlevenez, Plouhinec and Riantec.
