Limours, the town
Limours covers 14.3 km², lies between 100 and 177 m above sea level and had 6,517 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Limours (pronounced [limuʁ]), sometimes called Limours-en-Hurepoix, is a French commune situated thirty-one kilometres south-west of Paris in the département of Essonne in the Île-de-France region. Located on a plateau crossed by a stream, the Prédecelle, the agricultural and commercial town, a rival of Arpajon, was incorporated into the royal domain in 1376 by Charles V, then given as an appanage to favourites and confidants. Limours was in the 1930s directly connected to Paris by the Paris - Chartres via Gallardon line until its closure on the eve of the Second World War.
A little history
The name Limours comes from the Gaulish word limo or lemo, meaning elm. This suggests that a community may have settled near the Prédecelle as early as the first millennium before our era. Palaeolithic remains have been found on the plateaux. After the conquest of Gaul by the Romans, a road was built linking Autricum to Lutèce and passing through what is now Limours, whose name is nonetheless only attested in 703, in its Latin form Lemausum, in a charter of Childebert III.
