Le territoire de Limonest (9 km2) est étiré du nord au sud sur environ 5 kilomètres mais c'est dans le sens ouest-est, d'une largeur variable autour de 2 km, que l'on trouve l'explication de son relief étagé entre 275 et 602 mètres. La commune est située à la retombée occidentale du massif calcaire des monts d'Or. Les couches géologiques qui constituent ce dernier présentent une forte dissymétrie du fait de son basculement vers l'est en direction de la Saône. Elles se succèdent ainsi par leur tranche et sont étagées d'ouest en est depuis le socle cristallin du Massif Central jusqu’au Lias ou Jurassique moyen en passant par le Trias et le Jurassique inférieur.
