Limay covers 11.5 km², lies between 17 and 137 m above sea level and had 17,885 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Limay is a French commune in the Yvelines and the Île-de-France region. It is a small industrial town, situated on the banks of the Seine, in the south of the Vexin français, opposite Mantes-la-Jolie, 45 km west of Paris. The commune, which has 300 hectares classified as sensitive natural areas, has been a "ville-porte" of the Parc naturel régional du Vexin français since 1 July 2005.
A little history
The site of Limay was already inhabited in prehistoric times. Numerous archaeological remains such as polished and cut stones, arrowheads and axes have been found within the communal territory, notably during the exploitation of sand and ballast pits in the quaternary alluvial deposits. Before the Roman conquest, the territory was occupied by the Celtic people of the Véliocasses, attached to Belgic Gaul. In 1376, Charles V founded a monastery of Célestins at Limay, situated among the rocks and quarries of Saint-Aubin, and dedicated it to the Holy Trinity.
