Libourne, the town

Libourne covers 20.6 km², lies between 2 and 28 m above sea level and had 25,036 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Libourne is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of the Gironde, of which it is one of the sub-prefectures, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. This former bastide founded in the 13th century by Roger de Leybourne, sénéchal of Gascony for the King of England, is today the principal town of the east of the département. With 25,036 inhabitants in 2023, at the heart of an urban unit of 34,856 inhabitants in 2012 and an urban area of 36,144 inhabitants, it forms part of the Arcachon-Bordeaux-Libourne axis, a metropolitan area concentrating nearly 1,250,000 inhabitants.

A little history

At the time of its foundation, the purpose of Libourne was that of a maritime port for the wine trade and a river port for the timber trade, the final destination of the gabarres descending the Dordogne laden with, amongst other things, hazel wood destined for the vineyards. The bastide of Libourne, at the confluence of the Dordogne and the Isle, with a river and maritime port on the Dordogne, was conceived in 1268–1270 to become the natural outlet for the wines of the Dordogne valley, wines from the Saint-Émilionnais, the Bergeracois, etc., exported from the end of the 13th century to England.
