A little history
The land of the commune of Les Martres-de-Veyre has been occupied for a very long time, as attested by the results of various archaeological excavations carried out on its territory or that of neighbouring communes. The oldest recorded evidence to date of human occupation at Les Martres is a Magdalenian site located near the Allier, close to the pont de Longues linking Les Martres-de-Veyre to Vic-le-Comte (present-day road D225). The commune also shows some traces of occupation during the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. These occupations are probably to be linked with the hilltop settlements that developed during these periods at the summit of the puy de Corent.
