A little history
In the earliest times, the area was known by the name of Herbauges on account of its lush vegetation. After the conquest of Gaul by Jules César, the légion des Alouettes was sent to settle on the hill of the blé en herbe, which subsequently became known as the mont des Alouettes. In 1130, the agricultural and commercial capital was established at the abbaye de la Grainetière, founded by Benedictine monks originally from Saintonge. Six centuries later, the abbé Prévost resided there and wrote several pages of his celebrated novel Manon Lescaut.
