Les Clayes-sous-Bois is a French commune situated in the département of Yvelines in the Île-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Clétiens. A village whose church and a first château were built in the 12th century, Les Clayes remained until the 19th century an essentially agricultural territory, organised around the current rue Henri-Prou, the heart of the historic quarter.
A little history
Polished bifaces, knapped axes and bronze bracelets discovered on the site of Les Clayes and today preserved at the musée d'archéologie nationale de Saint-Germain-en-Laye bear witness to its occupation from Prehistory onwards. A stone pathway of which some remains survive passed through the village. It is known today as the « chemin aux Bœufs », which leads as far as the forest. As its name suggests, this secondary road was used for the transport of cattle from Normandy. The animals were then inspected at Chavenay before being transferred to the markets of Poissy and Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
