Lège-Cap-Ferret is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of the Gironde, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. An integral part of the former province of Gascogne, it falls within the boundaries of the pays de Buch, the Landes de Gascogne and the forêt des Landes. Its territory consists principally of a peninsula situated between the bassin d'Arcachon and the Atlantic Ocean, on which lies, from north to south, a conurbation of several villages, Lège (bourg), Claouey, le Four, les Jacquets, Petit Piquey, Grand Piquey, Piraillan, le Canon, l'Herbe, la Vigne, Cap Ferret and la Pointe.
A little history
The village of Lège is said to have been moved three times over the centuries to escape the encroachment of the sands. More than 2,000 years ago, the bassin d'Arcachon did not exist. In its place, the mouth of the river L'Eyre formed a wide delta. At the time of the Roman conquest, the northern bank of the estuary corresponded to a line situated approximately in the extension of the current northern coastline.
