A little history
Belle-Île is designated in ancient itineraries under the name Vindilis ("belle île"), and as insulae venetii "îles vénétiques" together with Houat, Hœdic and Quiberon, which made Palae a port of the Vénètes, a stopping point for their flat-bottomed sailing vessels which resembled large present-day sinagots and which handled traffic with the Île de Bretagne from their capital Vannes.
