Lauzerte (Lausèrta in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the north-west of the département of Tarn-et-Garonne, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Quercy Blanc, corresponding to the southern part of the Quercy, which owes its name to its Tertiary lacustrine limestone. The commune holds the label of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.
A little history
Raymond VI de Toulouse, who already owned a château there, founded a bastide at Lauzerte by granting it customs. The town subsequently experienced the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion, as a result of which its churches had to be rebuilt. During the Wars of Religion, Symphorien de Durfort, sire de Duras, of the Huguenot faction, took the town by breaking through the walls at the location of the present-day rue de la Brèche. All 597 inhabitants, men, women and children, were killed on the orders of Duras.
